i love semperit. it's one of Malaysia's traditional cookies, served during Eid celebrations. it's sweet and milky, and are usually rectangular shaped with jagged surface, or in simple dainty flower shapes adorned with a teeny tiny slice of red (or sometimes green) cherries. i personally favor the latter over the first, but since i've lost the 'flower semperit' mould, i had to settle with the rectangular ones.
it's almost a personal tradition for me to make semperit every year for raya... by saying that, i don't mean that it's my tradition since i was a little kid or anything, it just means my tradition since a few years ago. HAHAHA. i'm determined to make semperit every year for raya! let's all do that, eat semperit, and be happy! :)
anyhow, last year i made a few batches of semperit... but none came out decent! i was devastated (but not as devastated as those times i made les fickle macarons tho)
that's why i'm excited now, since my semperit this time around, came out pretty good! :)
sebelum masak :)
this time, i used the mould for tart nenas to make rectangular semperit. i used THIS recipe, which is really great! it's really simple, and the semperit came out really good, and tastes yummy! i just did a few tweaking; i added a few teaspoonfuls of imitation vanilla into the dough, since mine was a tad dry to form a ball of dough. i don't know whyyy, must be something wrong i did! aandd, i didn't use any cornflour since we didn't have any at home, and it was already late to go out to buy any! (i made these semperit on a whim, after a surge of raya spirit right after listening to ahmad jais's selamat hari raya).
dah masak! (not much difference ey?)
i sprinkled pink-purple-white sugar sprinkles onto the semperit... they turned out quite the girly batch didn't they! hahaha. i think they looked pretty :')
semperit raya (recipe adapted from myresipi)
- 300g butter (softened at room temperature)
- 160g icing sugar
- 210g custard powder
- 290g plain flour
- 2 egg yolks
- beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- mix in egg yolks, and continue beating.
- add in both flours, fold mixture until it turns a bit like bread crumbs, but sticks together when you press them.
- using mould, press dough onto well greased tray/lined with parchment paper.
- sprinkle colourful sprinkles onto dough.
- bake in preheated oven at 150 C for 30-35 minutes or until the bottoms are slightly brown.
if you prefer the semperit to be slightly on the crunchy side, i think using cornflour as the original recipe calls for will be necessary. hehehe. but i prefer my semperit to be soft and dainty :)
looking forward to making jars and jars and jars of semperit for this raya... that is, if i have the time... and energy. hahaha. i'm starting my uni placement next monday, up until late september. i'm pretty excited... but a wee bit nervous to go to an actual working place. i hope for the best, insyaAllah. tolong doakan saya kawan-kawan! :)
